From Stem to Stern

A True Life Adventure

Linda Petrat has lived a life of high adventure, both on and off the sea. In From Stem to Stern: A True Life Adventure, her riveting follow-up to A Great Big Adventure on a Good Little Boat, Linda tells the exciting story of her life, soup to nuts: from the transition between 1960s stateside family normality to an untethered life as a young teen aboard a schooner in the Bahamas, and then her return back to the States. Then there are the idyllic New England “farm years,” when Linda and her husband raised two daughters, in a home she designed and built, as well as a slew of animals and…Christmas trees. Then a disaster, then a true disaster, and then tough-nosed rebuilding.

Linda Petrat does it all and then some in this sparkling and thoughtful memoir packed with wisdom and wit gleaned from an inspirational life truly lived in adventure, both on and off the sea.

Linda Petrat

Linda Petrat is a warrior. You will rarely meet a woman who has seen and done so much. July 2019 saw the publication of Linda’s second book, From Stem to Stern: A True Life Adventure, jam-packed with one adventure after another. Linda grew up in the Bahamas aboard her family’s schooner; crewed on Tall Ships, sailed Ensigns, and piloted barges; built homes and restored cottages in New England; and once owned a Christmas tree farm, raised all sorts of livestock, and grew organic before organic was cool. With wit and wisdom, Linda Petrat looks at her life in From Stem to Stern and takes her readers on a remarkable ride.
From Stem to Stern is the follow up to Linda’s first book, A Great Big Adventure on a Good Little Boat, a delightful, moving, and witty account of her voyage on her 22-foot Pearson Ensign sailboat, the Summer Wind, from Maine to Florida, following the demise of her 37-year marriage. Sailing solo for all but the first week, Linda’s storytelling skills paint vividly colored images of the challenging trip, while introducing us to her gentle mind, her courageous heart, and her quiet humor. Linda will inspire everyone in the confidently resolute way she deals with life: its happiness and success, adversity and tragedy.

An admirable role model of independent success, Linda Petrat has figured out how to live a happy, adventuresome life on her own terms. Both A Great Big Adventure on a Good Little Boat and From Stem to Stern: A True Life Adventure are available through personal appearances and on Amazon.com.

A Great Big Adventure on a Good Little Boat

Just months after her 37-year marriage crumbled, 64-year-old wife, mother, and small business owner Linda Petrat undertook a three-month voyage on her “good little boat”—a 22-foot Pearson Ensign racing sloop, the Summer Wind—from Kittery, Maine, to Sarasota, Florida.

Linda’s journey contains profound lessons for everyone faced with life-changing events—for all of us who want to come out the other side, whole and happy.

I heard Ms. Petrat speak about her trip, and purchased the book. Very easy to read, well-written. Explores her personal situation and background along with the trip down the East Coast. An incredible woman who tackles any possible obstacle with a can-do approach. Quite a courageous, adaptable person!

I only met the author briefly at a book signing but having read her book, I have a lot of respect for her. I think most readers will feel like she’s a friend by the end of the book even though she won’t know you. She also includes some historical background about the various places she passes by or stops at. I found that a very interesting addition to the book. So, I strongly recommend picking up a copy of this book if you want a fun read and some inspiration.
